Fancier dress - Who are we?Fancier Dress is the sister company of Threadbare Theatre Company (TTC).
Lucy Linger set up TTC in November 2003 when she directed and designed a production of The Alchemist at The Courtyard Theatre in London. Further productions followed including Little Pete at the Edinburgh Fringe festival and Wyrd Sisters at Upstairs at the Gatehouse. Lucy directed and designed the shows and it was whilst she was tackling the familiar problem of where to find reasonably priced, authentic costume that she came across a Fancy dress shop in Twickenham that was closing down.
Dazzle of Twickenham had been established by a dance troop of the same name and over the years had accumulated a wonderful catalogue of costumes, including many pieces from the Royal Opera House. As a result it gained a great reputation in the area for quality costumes and they were regularly supplying costumes to the nearby television studios.
The owner was now retiring and selling the stock on. After much discussion with her husband, Richard Moore, who had also been involved with TTC, Lucy decided to purchase the entire collection and set up a fancy dress and costume hire business to run alongside TTC and address the needs of fringe and small scale theatre companies and schools for quality, authentic costumes at a price they could afford, as well as hiring direct to the public.
A tip off from a friend then led them to Manchester and another fancy dress shop whose proud owners were also heading for retirement. Lucy and Richard snapped up their stock and after 2 trips to Manchester in 18 hours in a Luton Van, they had more than doubled their stock to over 2,000 costumes.
LucyLucy studied Drama at Exeter University, after a lifetime of directing her sister and her cousins in plays and sketches at Christmas, in costumes from the family “dressing up box”. Having studied Fashion and Textiles and made many of her own clothes, Lucy pursued her interest in directing and costume during her degree course, costuming The Government Inspector in her second year and receiving a first class award for her final three directing pieces.
Lucy went on to complete a postgraduate diploma in Directing with Court Theatre Training Company in 2003, culminating in the huge success of her first professional production, Ben Jonson's The Alchemist. In May of 2005 she married lifetime friend and fellow TTC company member Richard, and now brings her love of theatre and costume to the shop. She says working in the shop feels just the same as dressing up when she was a child - now she just has a bigger dressing up box and more friends to costume!
RichardRichard studied Social and Economic History at Exeter University and, following graduation, decided he ought to be working in marketing. He very quickly was. He continued his studies with a Diploma from the Chartered Institute of Marketing, during which time he also assisted with their website design.
Richard became involved in Threadbare Theatre Company whilst helping out his friend, and now wife, Lucy. He became steadily more involved in the company, from website design and marketing, to being handy with a drill and screwdriver at late night get-outs for shows. After making the move to costume hire he is busy trying to avoid going near a sewing machine, preferring to work on storage and display!
